A beverages producer experienced a failure on a critical production line over a weekend. Technical support was initially provided telephonically, with physical repair intervention arranged two days later, following acceptance of the repair quotation. Due to the urgency of the breakdown, express logistics were required to move the necessary equipment to Cape Town. Production resumed four days after the failure.
The line runs approximately 180 pallets per 12-hour shift — about 15 pallets per hour. Ninety-six hours of unavailable capacity represents roughly 1,440 pallets of potential production. Even at a conservative contribution of R1,000 per pallet, the exposure is approximately R1.44 million against a direct repair cost of R36,957.80 — about 39 times the repair expenditure. At R2,000 per pallet, the exposure approaches R2.88 million, or 78 times.
Key finding: the financial significance of a critical automation component is not determined by its purchase price. A repair of under R37,000 restored a production asset whose prolonged unavailability could have exposed millions of rand in production value. Keep critical spares, obsolete components and a rapid-response repair partner within reach.
